Verum vs ChatGPT: one lab, or every lab on your own keys

ChatGPT is OpenAI's own assistant — a highly polished, consumer-ready product built around OpenAI's models, with voice, image generation, a code interpreter and a big apps ecosystem. It is excellent, and for a single all-round assistant it is hard to beat.

Verum is a different kind of tool: a bring-your-own-key workbench where you run GPT models alongside Claude, Gemini, Grok, Kimi and Perplexity Sonar, compare their answers on the same prompt in a blind Truth Arena, and see what every call costs. You can paste your OpenAI API key into Verum and use GPT there too — so for many people it is not either/or.

Use your OpenAI key inside Verum

Verum ships an OpenAI provider. Create an API key at platform.openai.com, paste it into Settings, and GPT models appear next to Claude, Gemini, Grok and Kimi in the model picker. From there you can run the same prompt on GPT and a rival lab at once and decide for yourself which you prefer.

One important distinction: a ChatGPT Plus/Pro subscription is not the same thing as an OpenAI API key. Verum uses the API (billed per token by OpenAI), not your ChatGPT login. They are separate products with separate billing.

When ChatGPT alone is the better choice

If you want one polished assistant that does voice, generates images, runs a code sandbox, and has first-class mobile apps, ChatGPT is the stronger single product. Verum does not try to replace any of that.

If you would rather not create API keys or think about per-token billing at all, a flat ChatGPT subscription is simpler. BYOK is a feature for people who want lab-list pricing and multi-lab choice, not for everyone.

When Verum adds something ChatGPT does not

ChatGPT answers a question with one model. Verum lets you ask several labs the same thing and compare — blind, so brand names do not bias you — then keeps a personal ranking from your votes. That is the whole point: seeing where GPT is genuinely better, and where Claude, Gemini, Grok or Kimi win for your work.

Because Verum records cost per call and runs on your own keys, you also get honest spend visibility and no lock-in to a single lab. If OpenAI has a bad week for your task, you switch the model chip — not your whole workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Is Verum a ChatGPT alternative?

Partly. ChatGPT is a single-lab assistant with voice, image generation and a code sandbox; Verum is a multi-lab workbench for comparing models on your own keys. Verum supports OpenAI as a provider, so many people use their OpenAI key inside Verum rather than choosing one or the other.

Can I use my ChatGPT account in Verum?

Not the ChatGPT subscription itself. Verum uses the OpenAI API, so you create an API key at platform.openai.com and paste that into Settings. The API is billed separately from a ChatGPT Plus/Pro subscription.

Can I compare ChatGPT (GPT) and Claude or Gemini?

Yes — that is the core of Verum. Run GPT and another lab on the same prompt in the Truth Arena, vote blind, and build a personal Best pick over time.

Is Verum cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?

It depends on usage. Verum is $12/month for the workbench and you pay each lab per token on your own keys. Light users often pay less overall; heavy users pay for what they actually use. Verum shows per-call cost so you can see your real numbers.

Does Verum have voice or image generation?

No. Verum focuses on text and vision chat plus multi-model comparison, pipelines and cost visibility. For voice and image generation, ChatGPT is the better tool.
