Verum vs Kimi: use Kimi alongside GPT, Claude and Gemini

Kimi is Moonshot AI's own product — a strong assistant and a well-regarded model family (Kimi K3, K2) known for very long context and agentic tool use, with a free-to-use consumer app. If you mainly want Kimi, its own app is a great place to use it.

Verum is a bring-your-own-key workbench. Add your Moonshot / Kimi API key and Verum runs Kimi K3 and K2.5 next to GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity Sonar, so you can compare them on the same prompt in a blind Truth Arena and keep what works. Verum talks to Kimi's OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://api.moonshot.ai/v1.

How to add your Kimi key in Verum

Create an API key at platform.moonshot.ai (the Kimi Open Platform). In Verum, open Settings, choose the provider Moonshot AI (Kimi), and paste your sk- key. The base URL defaults to https://api.moonshot.ai/v1 — if your key was issued on a mainland China account, switch it to https://api.moonshot.cn/v1.

Then pick Kimi K3 or Kimi K2.5 in the model chip and chat as usual. Verum also lists Kimi K2.7 Code and a 'Kimi (latest)' id that always tracks the newest stable model on your account.

When Kimi's own app is the better choice

If you only need Kimi, its consumer app is free and gives you the newest first-party features — agent mode and the latest model usually arrive there before anywhere else. Verum cannot beat first-party access to a single lab's newest tricks.

For heavy long-document work inside Kimi's own purpose-built interface, the native app is designed for exactly that. Verum injects matching document snippets into the prompt rather than replicating a full document workspace.

When Verum adds something Kimi does not

Kimi answers with Kimi. Verum lets you ask Kimi and GPT (or Claude, Gemini, Grok) the same question at once and compare them blind, then keeps a personal ranking from your votes — so you can see where Kimi's long context and value genuinely win, and where another lab is better for your task.

Because everything runs on your own keys with a cost receipt per call, you also keep one private console across every lab instead of a separate login per model — and no lock-in to any single one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Kimi in Verum?

Yes. Add your Moonshot / Kimi API key in Settings under the Moonshot AI (Kimi) provider, then pick Kimi K3 or K2.5 in the model chip. Verum uses Kimi's OpenAI-compatible API at https://api.moonshot.ai/v1.

How do I add my Kimi API key?

Create a key at platform.moonshot.ai, open Verum Settings, select Moonshot AI (Kimi), paste the sk- key, and save. Base URL defaults to https://api.moonshot.ai/v1 (use api.moonshot.cn/v1 for China accounts).

Which Kimi models does Verum support?

Kimi K3, Kimi K2.5, Kimi K2.7 Code, and a 'Kimi (latest)' id that tracks the newest stable Kimi on your account. Because it is OpenAI-compatible, you can also point a custom model id at the same key.

Is Verum free like the Kimi app?

No. Kimi's consumer app has a free tier; Verum is a $12/month workbench and you pay Moonshot per token on your own key (BYOK). What you get for that is multi-lab comparison, pipelines and cost receipts in one place.

Can I compare Kimi against GPT, Claude or Gemini?

Yes — that is the point of the Truth Arena. Run Kimi and another lab on the same prompt, vote blind, and build a personal Best pick from your own results.

Use your own keys. See what every answer costs.

$12/month for the workbench. Tokens are billed by the labs, at their price.
