Verum vs OpenRouter: an interface, not a replacement
These two are not really rivals, and it would be dishonest to present them as such. OpenRouter is infrastructure — one API key that reaches a very large catalogue of models, with routing and fallbacks. Verum is the workbench you sit in front of: blind side-by-side comparison, recorded votes, multi-model pipelines and a cost receipt for every call.
Verum ships an OpenRouter provider. You can paste your OpenRouter key into Settings and reach that catalogue from inside Verum, alongside your direct OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Groq and Perplexity keys. For most people the honest answer is not either/or.

Use them together
Add your OpenRouter key in Settings and its models appear next to your direct-lab models. That is often the best of both: OpenRouter for reach into models you do not want to open a separate account for, direct keys for the labs you use heavily and want list-price billing on.
Because Verum records cost per call, you can also see for yourself whether routing through OpenRouter or calling a lab directly is cheaper for your particular usage — rather than taking anyone's word for it.
When OpenRouter alone is the better choice
If you are building software, use OpenRouter directly. Verum is not an API and does not try to be one — there is no endpoint to point your application at, no fallback routing, and no SDK.
If your main need is reaching the widest possible catalogue from a single account with no per-lab signups, OpenRouter covers that better than Verum's direct-key model does on its own.
When Verum adds something OpenRouter does not
OpenRouter answers 'how do I call many models'. It does not answer 'which of these models is actually better for me'. Verum runs two models on the same prompt with identical settings, hides which is which, records your vote, and builds a personal ranking from those votes.
That preference history is yours and accumulates. It is also the input to Best pick, which is why Verum never shows a machine-generated score before you have voted — that would bias the very data the recommendation is built on.
